Article Six of the constitution:
Both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.
I just read more than 1215 comments about this post and only FOUR PEOPLE EVEN QUESTIONED IF THESE WERE VALID FACTS. Four.
I had a beautiful rant written explaining why this is terrible propaganda that takes archaic laws out of context, explained why laws like this are still in state constitutions and are totally ignored. Then I asked BEGGED someone to show me an example in which this has even been an issue in the past 100 years. I even offered my services as a former American Studies major and journalist / armchair historian to find an interesting narrative of the last known case in which this happened. I hypothesized why I thought it would even be an issue and planned on looking up all known articles and court documents and data.
But nope. Fuck it. Fuck all of you. Fuck the Internet. Fuck the groupthink that sites like Tumblr create in which otherwise semi-intelligent people don’t even question what *I* initially assumed was satire. How many people have liked this now? 1250? How many have written that they’re going to leave their states because of SOMETHING THEY READ ON TUMBLR?? I don’t care if it is hyperbole… it is a statement that will now be echoed so many times between idiot liberals who get their information from inaccurate blogs and reblogs without ANYONE EVEN VERIFYING IF IT IS FACTUALLY ACCURATE that it will become common knowledge tomorrow and cited on Wikipedia by the end of the weekend.
True story: I knew a woman who taught AP History in about 2001 in an affluent neighborhood of an area that is routinely profiled by the New York Times for its Education-Style features on fancy people doing fancy things and going to fancy colleges. She asked her students to write about historical figures from a personal perspective. Normal AP stuff — gets the kids out of the books, kids get to empathize and imagine historical scenarios, some get creative, teach gets to read things beyond formulaic essays on Manifest Destiny. Yeah, well, more than half of the class wrote about Jack and Rose from James Cameron’s seminal masterpiece, Titanic. So she failed them. Then the angry parents of these spoiled rich children WHO COULD NOT DISCERN FACT FROM FICTION demanded her resignation. After much fighting, she ultimately resigned from her position because parents decided that their 16-year-old geniuses deserved a 4.0. instead of a 3.9 because they failed a paper. I always wondered what happened to those kids. I stopped wondering a few years ago. Today? I’m pretty sure I found a few of them.
Look, let’s be honest. There are idiots in every generation. I’m sure a lot of people close to my age or much older than it have “liked” this… or something as asinine without even thinking to question its origin or its agenda. But this? Not a damn one on my feed. Not. A. Damn. One.
I’m not going to call any of you out personally for being insane, ignorant and quite possibly illiterate. It’s mean, and it’s way too easy. Plus you all posted this and reposted this so any interested party can click on the trail and read every single inane comment that I just did. And, in return, I ask that you just do me one solid… stay the hell away from the news if you ever decide to protest outside your computer. Cute, young morons who can only speak in bumper sticker clichés make amazing soundbites and *anything* that comes out of your unlined little mouths will derail any and all good your physical presence will provide. Just stick to your public “likes” on sites like this and let the real adults — or at least the ones that understand context and history — do the heavy lifting.

None of my fears are irrational. I could legitimately choke to death on a giant calcium pill and no one will be there to find me… let alone help me. This is why I outsource my coffee. It’s also why I post on blogs all day. Accountability. — just a normal adult having a normal adult conversation
